Not at all new to the site, but don't usually stop around here often. I did today and saw this thread, and of course (since I'm blogger material to the nth degree!), was tempted to drop a few thoughts of my own. I figure we gotta show up with our thoughts for this thing to work, right? So I am here. Finding my way. Thirty-six years old, married, no kids (but I'm praying that will be changing in the future, as we are actively pursuing adoption), work with college students, passionate about global and social justice, care for the poor and radical discipleship in my commitment to serving Jesus. First things, first, right? And I guess I consider myself a poet, too. A few days ago, I was watching the film "In My Country" (with Samuel L. Jackson and Juliette Binoche), which is a film about post-apartheid reconciliation in South Africa. Samuel L. Jackson's character was named Langston, and there is a point in the movie where he pulls a book of poetry written by Langston Hughes from someone's book shelf and states that Langston is his favorite writer. Another woman states a few lines of a poem by Langston (a pretty common and well-known one, albeit), but I was able to finish it, and my husband looked at me with surprise. I think being steeped in the work of black poets from an early age had a profound effect on me, and I just feel like it's not only a part of my history and experience, but I feel like it's a part of my soul. It's a part of who I am, and what it means to be me. I will always love poetry, particularly poetry written by black voices.
It is hot here today, and I think the heat must surely test the integrity of my computer system, but it's trusty dusty. And God is faithful, that He allows it not to just melt and fall to pieces! I'm hoping for cooler days soon; the 90s are a bit much for me.
Hoping to read more of the thoughts of poets in this forum. I think such thoughts are pure gold.
Peace all,
Michele (Bay)
