TITLE
Does the title add something to the poem? Does the title generate interest, and hint at what the poem is about? Is the title appropriate to subject, tone and genre?
SUBJECT
Does the poem rise above the purely personal to become broadly relevant or universal? Who is speaking, and under what circumstances? Is the tone appropriate for the subject matter and audience?
FORM
Do the form and subject complement each other? Do line breaks work together with punctuation to show readers how the poem is to be read?
IMAGERY & ILLUSTRATION
When reading the words, what images do you see? Are the mental images powerful and/or vivid? Did illustrations enhance or detract from the poem? Are the metaphors and/or similes fresh and convincing? Do metaphors exist on various levels? Overall, is the writing giving the reader an aesthetic experience?
WORD CHOICE
Is the word choice appropriate, economical, and varied? Are the words understandable? Are cliches used? Are there superfluous adjectives and/or adverbs? Do the adjectives and adverbs strengthen or weaken the nouns? Are there several words where one carefully chosen word will do?
SOUND
How does the poem sound when read out loud? Is the sound supportive of the poem? If there is rhyme, is it subtle, natural, inevitable, pleasurable?
GRAMMAR & SPELLING
Are there non-deliberate spelling errors and/or grammatical errors?
OVERALL IMPRESSION
How do all the above work together? Is the poem original, honest, coherent, expressive, significant? Were you inspired by the poem?
OTHER
- Please offer suggestions for improving the poem. If no suggestions can be offered because the poem was excellent, you should note what points of excellence caught your eye.
- Please critique the poem in terms of how the message was delivered and the power of that delivery. Please do NOT critique the poem based on whether you liked or disliked; or agreed or disagreed with the message of the poem.
