October 2006 Dear This I Believe Essayist,
Welcome to another of our occasional updates on what is happening with the This I Believe project.
Book of Essays Now Available This week, Henry Holt and Company released the This I Believe book. This lovely hard-cover edition includes 60 essays from our series on NPR, as well as 20 essays from the original radio show hosted by Edward R. Murrow in the 1950s, along with photographic portraits of many of the essayists. This book, as well as an unabridged audiobook with each of the essays read by the essayist, is available wherever books are sold. Please ask your local independent bookseller (visit booksense.com to locate one) or visit amazon.com, borders.com, or barnesandnoble.com to order your copy online. By ordering online from one of these booksellers, This I Believe gets a small percentage of each sale.
As of this writing we are scheduled for book signings and related events in Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Washington D.C., Boston, Austin, Louisville, Milwaukee, and Madison. Please visit the News page of our website for more details or to see if we’re coming to a town near you. If you live anywhere near one of our book event cities, please plan to attend – we would love to meet you in person.
Request for Support This I Believe depends on financial contributions from our friends to keep our weekly broadcasts on the air. Our supporters also enable us to reach young people across America with educational materials to engage them in exploring their beliefs. Unfortunately, we lost $250,000 this year when a corporate sponsor suspended their funding for the project because of losses they sustained during Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. We are trying every way we know to replace this critical funding for our project.
Can you please help? Your contribution to This I Believe—in any amount— will help us meet this shortfall. Your donation will support the production of the essays you enjoy each week, the website that archives all of our work, and the educational outreach activities that touch the lives of thousands of students. This I Believe, Inc. is a non-profit organization, and your donation is tax- deductible to the extent the law allows. Contributions by credit card or PayPal can be made online by visiting our secure donation page.
Or you can mail a donation to:
This I Believe, Inc. P.O. Box 5031 Louisville, KY 40255
We are also looking for any suggestions you might have for businesses, foundations, or other funding sources that might be interested in our efforts. You can email your ideas to us at friends@thisibelieve.org. We greatly appreciate your help. Essay Selection Process Many essayists are curious about the process we use to pick the essays we air each week on NPR. We have recently made some changes to our website to make things clearer for future essayists, but we thought it might be appropriate to say a few words here about our editorial procedures.
Every submitted essay is reviewed for potential broadcast on NPR; however, we cannot guarantee that any essay will go on the air. Each essay goes through a rigorous selection process by many people. It takes our reviewers about six weeks to review and decide which essays will be considered for broadcast.
Should an essay be selected for potential broadcast on NPR, the essayist would be contacted by one of our staff. If an essay is selected for potential broadcast by a local public radio station, one of their staff would contact the essayist.
Our project’s goal is to open a public dialogue about belief—one essay at a time. To that end, every essay we receive is an important part of our project. We have built an online archive on our website to house every essay we receive, and your essay, unless it is still actively being reviewed, can be found there. Please click here to find your own essay in the database, or to read statements of belief from others in your community, across the country, or even from other nations.
Subscribe to our Newsletter Our free This I Believe e-newsletter keeps you up to date on current and future essayists and gives you access to insider news. If you would like to subscribe, please click here.
As always, thank you for being part of our project!
