a tattered quilt...
heavy with patches of loyalty
woven tight in Mama’s embrace
and bound with blue sprigs of
faded hope remnants,
cornered with uneven squares of
Daddy’s handkerchief,
endlessly soaked with
broken heart scented tears,
tied to swatches of hard knocks and
mis-matched scraps of reckless liberties,
sprinkled with discolored stains of
ripened sensibility,
flaunting the odd rip from
jagged claws of disappointment’s rage,
peppered with holes chewed by
time hungry moths of
impatience…
answering a new day’s silent urge to
draw it close and smell
musty familiar of lessons rent,
being warmed in hand-me-down
gratitude against the chill of
what could've happened…
