who is Saul Williams and what is he about?
i've seen his web site, but that didn't tell me much.
thought it would be better to get some words in context ... as in, from somebody with an objective viewpoint; not an agenda.
thanx.

most folks either love or hate saul with a passion... he's been the face of performance poetry for at least ten years now and if u ask the average joe to name a contemporary poet, he's proly the one who'll be mentioned. i think he's a little too 'avant garde' sometimes - trys too hard to live up to his 'creative genius' label... but he's dope tho. i consider them the hiphop version of yusef komunyakaa and rita dove (im not a big fan of either of them either... but yusef is growin on me. i see some of barely po in him and thats elevated my interest in him) saul and ursula will proly go down as their generation's version of ozzie davis and ruby dee (more-so due to the lack of cultural competition)... they both have a few mainstream poetry cd's out... ...they like to take risks, thats about all i can say about that. but should they ever join the PJs, then "AWWWMAN, THEY AWESOME AS FUCK!"and that will be the only part of this whole reply that yall can quote me on...

Saul Williams more mainstream claim to fame came through the 1998 move "Slam" that clumsily depicted the Slam genre. Here's a synopsis/critique, A darling of the 1998 festival circuit, Marc Levin's Slam won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance as well as the Camera d'Or (best first film) at Cannes. Despite its shortcomings, the film merits these awards--Slam offers a strong cast and compelling subject matter, a perfect setting with a killer soundtrack, and over-the-top rap poetry. The film opens with an exterior shot of the protagonist, Raymond Joshua (played by real-life poet Saul Williams), walking away from the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C. The image of a young black man turning his back on this symbol of government scant minutes before he's popped on a chump-change drug charge is poignant and disturbing--not easily forgotten by anyone aware of the immense contradictions inherent in the demographics of the nation's capital. Slam depicts Raymond's fall from relative innocence, and his apparent redemption. As a small-time dope dealer and street poet, his arrest thrusts him into an unfamiliar world--the violence of life in the slammer is palpable and altogether frightening. Incarceration, however, awakens the slumbering power of Raymond's poetry; eventually, its strength keeps him alive. In a prison yard scene when he's about to get whomped, Raymond gives free rein to his words, choosing poetry in motion over violence. Hearing Raymond's impassioned words, the hardened cons let him walk. One of them even covers his bail, and Raymond hits the streets, eager to check out Lauren (Sonja Sohn), the creative-writing teacher he met behind bars. Although the third act dilutes the credibility established by Levin's in-your-face vérité style, Slam is relentlessly passionate, unswerving in its conviction that there's an alternative to the violence that decimates North America's inner cities. Indeed, for all the film's preachiness, we cheer Raymond on, fueling his poetry, hoping, somehow, that it can transform those around him. Peace is the word. if you lick him pass him sister. dont be greedy..
saul williams in his latest poetry book the something scrolls
i cant remember the name. anyway in the book he finally admits that he stole the line that made him fameous
the one about standing on the corner selling amythest rocks he was in a tunnel in newyork trying o act like he knew how to tag trains which he admits he is no good at when he says he found this paint can that was laying on the ground he said it 'felt funny' was weighted funny so he took it home pried it open and spent like two weeks trying to decipher the alphabets and when he was done he saw the phrase
'i stand on the corner slinging amathyst rocks' or something to that effect and fromthere he started writing
he was also a drama/performing arts major in college. which was whyhe was good at slam. most of the poets in slam are poets trying to conjure up emotion. but the ones who tend to win, act out the poem. like theatre majors. the pleasant suprise is the poet who performs so flawlessly that you can see the sincerety in the words.which saul had. but others copied. so he became somewhat paroidied. and thats what happend on the slam scene whats his face ...taylor mali got mad and did a parody poem of saul williams and everyone got their panties in a knot.
so thats the gossip i heard as it relates to the gospel of slam
i dont slam anymore. im no good at it.
too much drahama. and it can be fun but its that vortex of fun. the universe that surrounds it is hotassed mess.
